In keloid scar treatment, compression therapy may be beneficial later as well. Therefore, compression therapy must be started straight after the surgery.

The formation of scar tissue is most pronounced during the first three months after the wound was made. This can last for weeks and sometimes for months and years.

At first, the surgical wound is always red. Wound healing is not over when the stitches are removed. Also, PRP (platelet-rich plasma) injections diminish scar formation. We recommend Mepiform-silicone tape, which prevents the overgrowth of your scar. Take care of your wounds and prevent scar-formation.
DOES MICROPORE TAPE HELP SCARS SKIN
Compression garments are indispensable in the aftercare of burn scars and are usually used in the postoperative period after skin grafting. If the pressure applied on the scar by this method is insufficient, made-to-measure compression garments are used. It is usually performed by means of a silicone gel patch. Scar overgrowth can be prevented by compression therapy. In some people, this overgrowth (excessive tissue growth during the process of healing) may be very severe and it is then referred to as keloid scarring. Scar overgrowth is more common in younger people. The final appearance of a surgical scar depends on how carefully the tissues are treated during surgery and which materials are used for the sutures, as well as on the skin’s own healing ability. Concealing such scars can be extremely difficult and sometimes impossible. For scars that are caused by injuries, there is often no choice. Once healed, such scars are practically invisible. When a plastic surgeon can freely choose the site of an incision, it is usually possible to hide the scar within the natural folds or wrinkles of the skin. Scars can affect our appearance and cause a constant disturbance. If you have any questions about SkinMedica skin care products or plastic surgery procedures at our Austin-based practice, please call us at (512) 288-8200 or contact us via email.Scar treatment and correction are challenging tasks for a plastic surgeon because wound healing is a long process that varies considerably from person to person. This sunscreen is a physical blocking agent that is 100% Mineral, provides broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection, is gentle enough for post procedure as sensitive skin patients. At this point, sunscreen becomes the next most important product- and I recommend Daily Physical Defense ™ SPF 30+ by SkinMedica. So when do my patients stop this therapy? I tell my patients that they can discontinue this process when they are happy with the appearance of their scars and the scar is no longer pink. They change the tape and re-apply products every 4 days. I let my patients shower, even with the tape on. Third, keeping a scar covered- even with tape, can prevent UV light penetration which can be attributed to permanent darkening of scars. Second, the tape keeps both the TNS Recovery Complex and the Scar Recovery Gel in very close proximity to the healing incision. First, we know that constant pressure by tape on maturing scars, helps to keep them flat. This tape stays on for 4 days- and allows for several things to happen. This is placed along the incision and then a microporous tape is applied. I use this in combination with Scar Recovery Gel with Centelline™ is clinically tested to reduce the appearance of new scars, by supporting the key phases of scar formation. TNS Recovery Complex is the only patented rejuvenating treatment that uses the highest level of a combination of growth factors clinically tested to improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, skin tone and texture. One week after surgery- my patients start using SkinMedica’s TNS Recovery Complex and Scar Recovery Gel. So, what, if anything, can a patient do to improve the appearance of the scar? At my practice, I have a post surgical protocol for handling the scar maturation process. All of these techniques are great- but the one thing that patients must remember, is that each person is different- and the ultimate appearance of the scar is due to that particular individual’s ability to heal- Yes, the genetic component. In addition, I am trained to minimize tension when closing an incision and to close it in a layered fashion. It is really important for patients to understand that as a board-certified plastic surgeon, I am trained to place incisions in the lines of skin tension, which can help scars to heal well. At my plastic surgery practice, I understand how important scars are to patients, whether it is cosmetic or a reconstructive procedure.
